Round 1

The first time I drove the 2 bridges to Mister Gee was at the beginning of January this year. Having only been open since November last year, I was expecting the worst. I imagined a tiny food truck, barely visible in the crowded carpark of the Burwood carwash. I was hungry, thirsty, tired and fast approaching “hangry”. Luckily for my partner, we were greeted by the tiny food truck, sans the throngs of eager burger enthusiasts.

The menu was pretty straight forward – 1 burger, 1 style of fries and 1 delicious sounding shake. Tonight on the rotating menu was The Fatboy burger, Dirtyfries and Baklava shake.

We quickly ordered our food and I made a controversial, snap decision to opt out of the bacon jam (what can I say, I’m a purist) and we grabbed a spot at a metal junkyard style table with Mister Gee tagged on the edge. They definitely had the decor down pat. It was no frills, casual, in your face, sit, eat and leave. This was my kind of joint.

In no more than 10 minutes our order was up. I jumped at my name and greedily grabbed the foil wrapped burgers and fries. Unwrapping our burgers, I was like a kid on Christmas day. I opened my delicious, hot present of grease, meat and cheese and before I knew it, my burger and fries were gone and indigestion was on it’s way.

The burger patties were perfectly “smashed” hot morsels of beef, masterfully squished on the grill just enough to form a crusty, caramelised edge, but with enough restraint to maintain a sizeable, juicy middle. The cheese was oozy and tasty and the spanish onion and lettuce gave a freshness to each mouthful, with the brioche bun giving that sweetness to cut the salt. The fries were not the best i’ve ever had but you can’t go too wrong with grated American cheese and fried potato. I would’ve preferred a chip with more substance, but to be honest, the burger well and truly made up for it.

Round 2

The best thing about Mister Gee Burger Truck is the ever changing menu. I have to say, I regularly stalk the trucks Facebook page like a school girl with a slightly unhealthy crush. When I saw the words Cheese Boogie and Truffle Fries appear on the page, I knew I had to return.

This time, there was a long line. However, I was too excited for the impending cheesiness that was to ensue. We were up and I ordered a DOUBLE Cheese Boogie. That’s double the meat, double the cheese.

The patties, yes plural, were again perfectly smashed and caramelised, the brioche bun was even fresher than before and the cheese… the CHEESE. This time I was full. Really, really full. The kind of full where you undo your belt, top button of your jeans and sigh out loud full.

But I was satisfied.

The Verdict

Double meat, double cheese wins every time. Round 3 Imminent.

SYDNEY FESTIVAL


 


Sydney Festival is well and truly over… Note to self, work on timing.

Luckily it’s never too late to look at photos of delicious, mouth watering food.

It was a balmy Thursday night when we ventured to Sydney Festival, set up in Hyde Park. Porteño and Messina were our main targets. We made a bee line for the stand and promptly ordered Chicken and Waffles, Philly Cheese Steak, Chilli Cheese Fries and a Salmon and Cream Cheese Bagel (for something light of course). From the Messina counter, we went with the Not Chicken and Waffles and a Not Cheeseburger.

The Chicken and Waffles were delicious and my favourite of the selection. Fried crunchy chicken, crispy bacon on top of a sugary, crusted Belgian waffle. The dessert was slightly underwhelming for all of the hype, but in saying that, deep fry some gelato on a waffle or slap some chocolate gelato on brioche bun and you can’t go too wrong.

Although Porteño and Messina set out to be the best in show, a left field quiet contender stood out as the shining, cheesy star. The Cheesesmith.

Tucked quietly in the back corner of the Hyde Park set up, was this gooey, mouthwatering, delicious, glowing beacon of cheesiness. Their fresh looking cheese plates were tempting, but my eyes were set on their cheese toasties; 3 cheeses with an optional 4th cheese. The definition of optional went out the window when I saw this “4th cheese”. The half wheel of Raclette sat toasting under its own personal grill, warming itself for the next order. Once it had developed a layer of bubbling, oozing mess it was removed from its home and the molten cheese was scraped on top of an unsuspecting 3 cheese toastie. I chose the Le Grand, which consisted of Spanish Manchego, Truffle Infused Cheddar and French Blue Cheese. Add a schmear of quince paste and this was the highlight of Sydney festival for me.

Because “That’s too much cheese” – Said no one ever.

Last week I finally made it to the renowned Devon Cafe in Surry Hills. Luckily I had Monday off from work so I could avoid the throngs of weekender foodies, flocking to try the food from the Good Food Guides “Food Cafe of the Year” 2014.

We made our way out to the back of the restaurant, which i have to say is cool in atmosphere but not in temperature. With a tin roof, they really need to invest in some major AC power, especially this Summer!

We situated ourselves with the menu and began to laboriously ponder over what to order. The menu changes with seasonality so even though I had read about a few of the dishes from other bloggers, some of it had since changed. Trying to decide on your order at Devon is like playing a table tennis match with yourself. Only the ball is 3 delicious sounding dishes, the paddle is your poor, hungry irrational brain and the table is… well it’s a table.

We placed our orders and waited patiently for our meals. WARNING – don’t read this next part if it’s late at night, you’re hungry and there’s no possible way for you get to Devon cafe in the immediate future. I have to say, writing this post at 10:30pm after having a very light dinner was not the most sensible decision.

Pork Belly Roll

This was a player straight out of left field. Not written about that much and definitely out shone on other blogs by some of the other favourites. I have to say it was actually one of my favourite dishes that I tried. Soft, melt in your mouth pork belly with crackling on a bed of refreshing asian slaw. It was perfectly paired with a kick of spice, sweetness and acidity from the Nam Jim dressing and the fried onions on top. Put it all on a brioche bun and you have one mouth watering roll I would keep coming back for.

Breakfast with the Sakuma’s

Miso grilled King Salmon, smoked eel croquette, 63C egg, radish salad with kewpie mayo. Probably the most talked about dish from Devon Cafe so far, this substantial plate of amazing flavours is a great option if you want to try something different. Each flavour is intense in it’s own merit but at the same time, work in complete harmony together. The only slightly negative comment i have is that the croquette is more of an Arancini ball. I assumed inside its crunchy crumb coating, it would be a delicious fluffy cloud of mash, mixed through with smoked eel, but instead I was slightly disappointed to be met with rice instead. Overall an amazing flavour sensation.

Little Lost Bread

I was pretty sad when we realised that the flavour of the french toast had changed and we never got to try the Peanut Butter and Nutella version. However, we were met with its slightly less intense cousin, Strawberry Shortcake aka Brioche French Toast with strawberries, strawberry cheesecake ice cream, arnotts biscuit crumble and balsamic glaze. Really when you mix french toast with brioche bread you’re pretty much on to a winner. Combine it with 4 types of strawberries (fresh, dehydrated, coulis and ice creamed), cheesecake and biscuit crumble? What could go wrong? Nothing, that’s what. It was delicious.

Naked Bruschetta

When this dish arrived at the table, it looked fresh. That bright green pea puree against the bright orange pumpkin was just ripe for a photo. However, against the other dishes at the table it was slightly underwhelming. Until I tasted it… Roasted pumpkin, pea and goat’s curd mousse, edamame beans, pea tendrils, focaccia and a 63C egg topped with sage and konbu crunch. Flavours were spot on and so fresh you could eat every single last drop on this plate and be at a very comfortable level of full. It was a refreshing change to the other heavier dishes.

Eggs Blini

I was so excited to try this dish. I’m an Eggs Benedict girl all the way and this was next level. Buckwheat blini, cured King Salmon, salmon caviar, asparagus, Mikado sauce & poached eggs. The eggs were poached to absolute perfection. No gooey whites but with perfectly oozy yolks. The salmon melted in your mouth, the caviar were delightful pops of salty goodness and the asparagus was refreshing and crunchy. Underneath was a cloud-like blini that was light as air, bringing together an almost perfect dish. Almost. For me the Mikado sauce was a little on the sweet side, which I’m never a huge fan off. A great dish but it definitely needed something, whether it be more caviar or some other element of salt or acidity to round it off.

Devon Cafe is definitely your one stop shop for experimental flavour combinations. Every element of each dish has been carefully thought of, cooked to perfection and well seasoned. Now the only thing left to do is to try Devon Cafes newest sibling, Devon on Danks, purchase a salted caramel soft serve and chips combo and my life is complete. With higher cholesterol levels.

What do you get when you pack a whole bunch of different Asian cuisines, a fine selection of alcohol and some loud, LED lit entertainment into Hyde Park? A really busy, loud, slightly overwhelming event during Good Food Month called the Night Noodle Markets.

During a couple of weeks in the Month of October, Hyde park was turned into a hustling bustling hawker centre of Asian delights. Supplying patrons with tastes of the Orient along with bars, music and entertainment. With up to 50 food stalls it can be slightly overwhelming, especially when trying to navigate through the throngs of hungry people, when you yourself are hungry enough to eat your own hand. With a rumbling stomach, comes rash decision making, which in turn, usually leads to disappointment and worst of all, food envy.

With this in mind, before going to the event, I strongly suggest reading up about the stalls, checking out some food blogs and seeing what people are raving about and ragging on. The last thing you want is a plate of overly oily, bland noodles when the person next to you is chomping on a Ramen Burger or a Woofy’s Asian Dog.

We had a plan. With our eyes set on the infamous Ramen Burger, we entered the arena armed with only the inkling of hunger setting in, cash money in our pockets and a positive attitude. That quickly dissipated into annoyance when we saw a line of no less than 80-100 people all with the same plan. All of a sudden that hint of hunger escalated into full blown starvation and irritation levels began to rise. I was officially hangry. Symptoms include irrational behaviour, bouts of yelling (usually at loved ones), foot stamping and pouting. Yes, I turn into a 5 year old when I get hungry, who doesn’t.

Luckily there were a few of us, so we left one in the queue for Ramen burgers and we went to gather extra food supplies. A quick trip to the Let’s Do Yum Cha truck and a tent nearby to get some crispy golden squid and I returned to normal, functioning adult behaviour.

I’ve got to say that the Ramen Burger was ok, albeit a bit of a gimmick and personally, give me a brioche bun any day. The fried ramen “buns” gave an interesting texture to the burger and the beef pattie was flavoursome but not overly exciting. We also had the rice burger with slow cooked sticky pork, which was also alright.

In general the Noodle Markets are a fun place to go with a group of friends as long as you’re not fussed about getting split up, can handle long queues and are happy to sit on any floor space you can find. With all negatives aside, they are a nice way to mix things up and try a whole bunch of different things all in one place.

Or if you’re a stickler for convenience like me, you could just go to your favourite local Chinese restaurant for dinner with your own bottle of wine and be in and out in a quarter of the time. To each their own.

This time we feasted on a smorgasbord of pork only BBQ as we celebrated our fat, delicious friend, the pig, with Black Betty’s Original Pork Party.

With nothing but pork on the menu we were treated to a selection of Smoked Pork Belly, Pulled Pork, Maple Glazed Ribs, Char Sui Pork Neck, Crumbed and Fried Pigs Tails, Chorizo Sausage, Bacon Beans and Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Of course we ordered all of it, which resulted in around 1.4KG of BBQ for 3 people. That’s not including the Bacon Beans, Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Kale and Edamame Salad, slaw and Brioche buns.

My favourites were the Char Sui Pork Neck, Glazed ribs, Sausage and the Mac ‘n’ Cheese. I could’ve done without the Smoked Pork Belly, because really, what is pork belly without the crackling?

Make sure you try Rita’s Hot Ass Sauce with your BBQ, it’s not the hottest ass i’ve encountered but it was tasty.

After we stuffed our faces full of meat, cheese, sauce and beer, we made the short drive to Brewtown in Newtown for Cronuts and coffee.

We chose 3 cronuts – Chocolate, Original Glazed and Passionfruit for a “lighter option” to quote the server. Light it was not, but delicious, it was.

Sunday will now officially be known as the day of pigging out like a big fat pig.

In April 2014 I took a little trip to the land of the free and the home of smokey, meaty, BBQ goodness, the U.S.A. Since then I have had a serious smoked BBQ meat craving.

Today It was well and truly satiated, when I made my way to The Oxford Tavern in Petersham, to sample Black Betty’s BBQ. Towards the end of last year, the crew from Drink ‘n’ Dine took over ownership of the Tavern. You may know them from past ventures such as Forresters, The Norfolk and The Carrington to name a few. In their most recent takeover, The Oxford Tavern has been through the signature Drink ‘n’ Dine make over, replacing topless waitresses, strippers and Jelly wrestling with bearded bar tenders in Hawaiin shirts, a taxidermied bear and a random assortment of stuff you’d find at Macklemore’s house. Most importantly they have introduced sweet sweet BBQ meats along with a new USA-ified menu featuring Bacon Sriracha Fries, Chilli Dogs, Fried Gaytimes and more as well as a range of beverages, local and imported to quench any thirst from Newtown’s Young Henrys Cider on tap to cans of Bud and St Moritz. In their trademark style, you won’t know what was actually brought in by the styling team and what was always there.

Enough chit chat about the “reno’d” venue, lets talk meat. Every weekend, Black Betty’s smokehouse takes center stage at the back of the Tavern in the newly refurbished beer garden, where you can still hear the faint sounds of the old pokies that used to take up residence. From 12pm Black Betty’s begins operations, serving freshly BBQ’d smoked meats until sold out. As you place your order, your meat is carved, weighed and plated in front of you.

We ordered 400gr of Pulled Pork, 200gr of Brisket, 1 Beef Short Rib, 1 Smoked Pork Sausage, 1 serving of Burnt End Beans and 1 serving of Kale & Edemame Salad to set some order in an otherwise meat filled universe. Accompanying the meal is a soft, sweet brioche bun and a good serving of ‘Slaw. Everything was delicious but the stand outs were the Pulled Pork, Beans and surprisingly the Smoked Sausage. The pork was juicy, stringy and served with just a dashing of BBQ sauce, which is just the way I like it. The beans were smokey, spicy and warming to the soul. It gave me greater pleasure eating them, knowing that each time meat was carved, the excess juices were scooped up and added to the bean pot, however, I would have loved some actual burnt ends thrown into the mix.

To accompany a truly decandent meal, $10 Bloody Mary’s (choose from 3 different styles) and a Young Henry’s Cider, oh and of course your token local crazy begging for money to pay her rent.

With all my favourite things in 1 place, The Oxford Tavern is now well and truly inserted into my eating roster.
